On the morning of May 26, Eastern Time, ARM released its latest high-end CPU and GPU architectures, Cortex-A78 CPU and Mali-G78 GPU, which will be used in next-generation flagship smartphones in 2021 and beyond.

Normally, ARM will not be seen in the promotion of new smartphones or tablets, but it is a vital company for hardware manufacturers.

ARM has provided chip makers such as Qualcomm, Huawei, and Samsung with designs to create system-on-chips that can power almost every mobile phone and tablet, and laptops such as Surface Pro X.

Cortex-A78 CPU performance increased by 20%

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 uses some customized ARM Cortex-A77 and Cortex-A55 designs for its Kryo 585 CPU, and Samsung's Exynos 990 uses Cortex-A76 and Cortex-A55 CPU cores and Mail-G77 GPUs.

ARM said that the Cortex-A78 CPU core design is undoubtedly the most efficient Cortex-A CPU we designed for mobile devices. Compared to last year s Cortex-A77 design, its continuous performance increased by 20%, while its power The budget stayed within 1 W.

According to ARM, this performance can provide higher efficiency for the demanding 5G battery consumption. The new CPU design is suitable for highly foldable devices with multiple larger screens.

ARM has also launched a new Cortex-X custom program for its partners to create its own dedicated Cortex CPU with ARM for specific purposes other than the Cortex-A78 in stock. The first of these chips is the ARM Cortex-X1, which ARM claims will provide 30%higher peak performance than the Cortex-A77.

The new GPU supports 24 cores and performance is increased by 25%

In addition, ARM also introduced the new mobile GPU Mali-G78, which supports up to 24 cores. ARM promises that it can increase its graphics performance by 25%compared to last year's Mali-G77. Mali-G68 is also the first GPU in the new mid-range product line. It is designed to help achieve certain performance and improvements of Mali-G7 8 in a more affordable packaging.

Finally, ARM also introduced a new Ethos-N78 Neural Processing Unit(NPU). Compared with Ethos-N77, its performance efficiency is expected to increase by 25%, which will bring better machine learning performance for mobile devices.

Hardware products equipped with the latest ARM architecture may come out in 2021

It will take some time before these designs are finally applied to smartphones or tablets, or they will be available later this year or early 2021. The next generation of intelligent hardware products using the latest ARM architecture is exciting.
